Nail Health Myths vs Facts
Separating Fact from Fiction
There is a lot of misinformation about nails and nail products on social media, from friends, and even from well-meaning family members. Unfortunately, many of these myths can lead people to make decisions that actually damage their natural nails.
At Me2You Nails, we believe that educated clients make the best decisions for their nail health. Here are some of the most common myths we hear—and the truth behind them.
Myth: Gel or acrylic nails ruin your natural nails
FACT:
Professional nail enhancements do not damage healthy natural nails when they are applied, maintained, and removed correctly.
Most nail damage happens because of:
-
Incorrect removal (especially peeling or picking products off)
-
Over-filing the natural nail
-
Poor application techniques
-
Using untrained technicians
When enhancements are removed properly, your natural nail should remain healthy.
Myth: Your nails have to "breathe"
FACT:
Nails are made of dead keratin cells. They do not have lungs and they do not breathe.
The nail receives nutrients and oxygen from the bloodstream through the nail matrix beneath the skin—not through the nail plate itself.
Taking a "break" from enhancements isn't medically necessary unless recommended for a specific nail condition.
Myth: White spots on your nails mean you're lacking calcium
FACT:
Most white spots are caused by minor trauma to the nail matrix, often from bumping or knocking the nail weeks earlier.
They are rarely related to calcium deficiency.
Myth: Cutting your cuticles is good for nail growth
FACT:
Your cuticle forms a protective seal that helps prevent bacteria, fungi, and other contaminants from entering the nail unit.
Only dead, loose cuticle tissue should be carefully removed by a trained professional. Healthy living tissue should never be aggressively cut.
Myth: Nails continue growing after death
FACT:
No, they don't.
After death, the skin around the nails dehydrates and retracts, making the nails appear longer.
Myth: Stronger products mean stronger nails
FACT:
The strongest product isn't always the best choice.
Different nail types require different products. A flexible natural nail may benefit from a more flexible enhancement, while a client with naturally firm nails may need something different.
Choosing the correct product is more important than choosing the hardest product.
Myth: If a nail lifts, it's okay to glue it back down yourself
FACT:
Household glue should never be used on nail enhancements.
Lifted product creates tiny spaces where moisture and bacteria can become trapped. It's always safer to have lifting assessed and repaired professionally.
Myth: Nail polish is bad for your nails
FACT:
Gel polish itself does not damage nails.
Damage usually occurs during improper removal, such as peeling or scraping the product off. Correct removal protects the natural nail.
Myth: Nail enhancements stop your natural nails from growing
FACT:
Your nails continue growing exactly as they normally would.
Enhancements simply protect the nail while it grows, allowing many clients to achieve longer natural nails than they could otherwise.
Myth: Thick nails are always stronger
FACT:
Strength comes from proper structure—not just thickness.
A nail that is excessively thick can still break if it lacks correct balance and architecture. A professionally structured enhancement provides strength while remaining comfortable and natural-looking.
Myth: Picking off gel only removes the product
FACT:
When you peel off gel or builder gel, you're usually removing layers of your natural nail at the same time.
This can leave nails thin, weak, and sensitive, making future enhancements less durable.
Myth: Natural oils make nails stronger
FACT:
Nails actually need moisture and oil to remain flexible.
Daily cuticle oil helps reduce brittleness, improves flexibility, and supports healthier-looking nails by preventing excessive dryness.
Myth: Nail fungus can always be identified by looking at the nail
FACT:
Many nail conditions look alike.
Discolouration, lifting, thickening, or changes in the nail may have many different causes. Only a medical professional can diagnose nail diseases or fungal infections.
If we notice anything unusual during your appointment, we may recommend consulting your healthcare provider before continuing with nail services.
Myth: UV lamps used for gel nails are dangerous
FACT:
Professional LED/UV nail lamps emit very low levels of ultraviolet light during short curing times.
Current research indicates that the exposure from professional nail curing is considered very low for most people. Clients who wish to minimise exposure even further may apply sunscreen to their hands beforehand or wear UV-protective manicure gloves with the fingertips removed.
Myth: Nail technicians can diagnose nail diseases
FACT:
Nail technicians are trained to recognise when something appears unusual, but we are not medical professionals.
We cannot diagnose infections, diseases, or prescribe treatment. If we notice changes that concern us, we'll recommend that you consult a qualified healthcare professional.
